Small Town Girl, Big City Dreams – Designer’s Dream in Van City
05/06/16 What does a girl from Winnipeg do with her dreams of being a fashion designer? Well, move to Vancouver of course! I met Trish while I was working on a film gig here in Vancouver. And as soon as she started talking, there was something familiar about her laugh, her cussing and her sense of humour that reminded me of Amy Schumer. She was from Winnipeg – a homegirl. Right away, she divulged that she was a fashion designer – one who not only designs clothes but also prints. How cool is that?!! I’ve always said that prints are underrated because some consider prints to be “too loud”. It could be because Trish and I came from a city where colorful prints were simply not part of everyday fashion. Black was, for the most part the color of choice by everyone. You couldn’t be caught dead in a fabulous print, unless you were the crazy, loud uncle with the  70’s wardrobe. Thank god, Trish moved to the West coast where one has the freedom to become a designer and create prints that are marketable. Trish has been able to create prints on wearable, stylish pieces that are versatile on […]
UGGly Winter Boots? Pt. 2 – How to wear them…
Hello and welcome to Part 2 of my homage to Ugg boots. Like I said before in my previous post, I have never been a fan of Uggs, until a short while ago. One of the main reasons why is that, these boots that weren’t very pretty, lasted for so long.  I couldn’t understand it. Maybe I should own a pair myself to realize the true Ugg experience. I get it now. The sheepskin in them are extremely comfy, no matter how Uggly I think they are. People eat them up because they’re easy to throw on. The history of Ugg boots actually dates back to 1978. A fellow named Brian Smith believed that these boots which originated in Australia would be a git in Southern California. He started selling them on the beach and he was right, surfers wore them, surfers’ girlfriends wore them and basically beach bums. They soon became a symbol of the casual Southern Californian lifestyle. A few years later, thanks to Britney Spears and other celebrities, mainstream followed suit and next thing you know, everyone and their little doggies were wearing them. It became a trend that lasted a little too long for my liking. […]
Winter Highs…
Happy Sunday everyone! I hope everyone in Winnipeg is enjoying the mild weather we’re having lately. It’s not -50! I’m not sure if we’re getting -50 back any time soon but I am definitely taking advantage right now. Yes, I’m talking about wearing lighter, less bulker Winter gear. For Christmas, I got a new coat by Minimum(shown here) which is more suitable for Fall/Spring,  but I had to rock it. I think it’s pretty wonderful and perfect for me. In the Winter, I usually choose comfort and practicality over being fashionable. Gone are the days of wearing hot leather booties in the snow with a cute peacoat. Not only is it not practical, it’s also uncomfortable. In -50 cold, I’ll be give me my parka and Sorels any day. What can I say, I’m older and kind of wiser now. Thankfully, these days, it’s only in the late teens and not a ridiculous high windchill. So, out comes the lighter, less bulkier, more fashionable gear. I’m wearing my Minimum coat, which has a fabulous cowl neck, biker zipper and length up to my knees. Again, not too tight, loose enough but stylish. I got this stylish mom thing down. I […]
Holiday Hangovers
So, the holidays are over and thank god! No more rushing to the mall or the grocery store for last minute tasks and no more Christmas spirit of thinking of others. Most importantly, no more endless holiday food of turkey, pastries, chocolates…and carbs!  I love my family and friends but Christmas giving time is over! It’s time to think about you.  Tis’ the season when we’re all inclined to think that it’s time to make changes in our lives, for the new year. We’re all wanting to eat better, exercise, quit smoking, etc… Around this time, we’re all inclined to feel like we need to make some changes in our lives, starting with a better diet and exercising more. But no matter how quickly you hit that treadmill, that feeling of bloatedness may still not go away. So, I’m here to help. There are 2 types of resolution makers: those who are doers and those who are talkers…and I am both. I’ll eventually do, but since I am a procrastinator and shamefully poor at time management, I sometimes am a talker. For the latter, a talker, I have a solution. You can use fashion to cover the lil pooch and […]
Hunter wellies? Don’t mind if I do…
As a mom, trying to be stylish and practical can be a fine line to draw. I am always one for style, but ever since I became a mom, I’ve always tried to merge style and practicality in one harmonious outfit. You just have to. It’s just a matter of finding the right balance of style and function. If you’re a mom and you can rock heels while pushing a stroller, then kudos to you. I, for one (although I’ve been known to run in my heels many moons ago),  cannot see the practicality of wearing heels while, pushing a stroller, especially for a long period of time It was only a few years ago that there was a market for stylish moms. Usually, being a “stylish” mom was only afforded to the rich…until now. Thanks to celebrity moms, it’s now more common to see moms in Uggs, Sorels or Hunter rain boots. The latter 2 more practical than the first against weather conditions but still, Uggs provide warmth and comfort. Nevertheless, celebrity moms rockin’ some of these items has made theme popular and fashionable because of their practicality. It wasn’t in the last 5 years that they’ve become more […]

Cha Cha Party
11/30/08 Last Thursday, I attended one of my favorite boutiques in the city’s customer appreciation party and even though I didn’t stay as long as I wanted, I still experienced the warm energy that I associate with Cha Cha palace. Every time I enter the 3 storey house, I can’t help but feel like I’m almost walking into my best friend’s house and then her, letting me raid her closet and Thursday was no exception. The staff, headed by the lovely Sandi Johnson were there to make us feel welcome and to show us the latest styles that they had to offer. The store was definitely buzzing that night as they even gave out surprise discounts. There was plenty of wine, champagne and SUSHI! But even on a regular day, the staff at Cha Cha are  quite warm and friendly. And this energy only adds and reflects the pieces that Cha Cha carries. On the first floor are the footwear, handbags, and jewellry, where you will see lines from Fly London, Lug and  Satya. The second floor is where I spent most of my time, and carries clothing lines such as OHM, Comfy, Metallicus, Free People, Beatrice Halloway just to […]
Give me Attitude!
Nov. 24/2008 This past weekend was pretty uneventful, except for the great store find. I was taking a stroll, more like a speed walk in Osborne village, when I happened to look up and beyond Kustom Kulture and Noir and found a modest little boutique called Attitude boutique. I climbed up the stairs, making sure I wouldn’t slip and saw a bright, clean store. Heather, the owner and I chatted for awhile and this is what I found out. The boutique catered to (among others) the Rockabilly chicks of the city. Rockabilly, I just learned is a style that is inspired by the 50’s pin up girl but with more edge, sexiness and of course, more chic. Think lots of color and retro print on tight fitted or A-lined skirts on the dresses. I’ve seen this style on ladies in other places such as Vancouver and evidently, it’s a huge look in the city. Then again, someone did tell me during the summer that the 50’s was back and I have been seeing alot of men with the “Grease” hairdo. It’s cool, although, I think I prefer the ladies’ styles better. On the other side of the style spectrum was […]
