Small Town Girl, Big City Dreams – Designer’s Dream in Van City
05/06/16 What does a girl from Winnipeg do with her dreams of being a fashion designer? Well, move to Vancouver of course! I met Trish while I was working on a film gig here in Vancouver. And as soon as she started talking, there was something familiar about her laugh, her cussing and her sense of humour that reminded me of Amy Schumer. She was from Winnipeg – a homegirl. Right away, she divulged that she was a fashion designer – one who not only designs clothes but also prints. How cool is that?!! I’ve always said that prints are underrated because some consider prints to be “too loud”. It could be because Trish and I came from a city where colorful prints were simply not part of everyday fashion. Black was, for the most part the color of choice by everyone. You couldn’t be caught dead in a fabulous print, unless you were the crazy, loud uncle with the  70’s wardrobe. Thank god, Trish moved to the West coast where one has the freedom to become a designer and create prints that are marketable. Trish has been able to create prints on wearable, stylish pieces that are versatile on […]
Spring Bomber
04/15/16 Spring has got to be my favorite season of the year. Not only because my birthday falls in April but because of what it signifies – a rebirth from the cold Winter season. Flowers start to bloom as the snow melts, the sun shines brighter as the days get longer, and of course, fresh fashion trends start to emerge. It’s a time of renewal – out with the cold and in with the new. People start to do some Spring cleaning in their homes, including cleaning out the closets full of drab, dull colored Winter clothing. In Vancouver, I definitely feel that Spring is in the air. On the streets, the cherry blossoms are a gorgeous pale pink and are almost fully blossomed, while people are already wearing their flip flops. It’s quite a difference from my hometown in Winnipeg where they just had a snowfall…again. In the Fashion world, there’s no limit as to what colours are worn. For 2016, Pantone released it’s color of the year as Rose quartz and Serenity. You will soon see this on the streets if you haven’t already. As Spring trends and colors start to emerge, you can’t help but feel alive! […]
DeNiro is Delightful in The Intern
09/25/19 A couple of days ago, I had the opportunity to preview the new flick, The Intern,  starring Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway and I must say, that it was quite charming. I wasn’t sure what to expect because I like going into movies being surprised and this movie did not disappoint. Usually, I label movies as RomCom’s, thrillers or comedy but this one I think has it’s own unique twist to it. Robert DeNiro plays Ben Whitaker, a retired widower and ex-vice president of a phone book company, who is actually bored of retirement. He’s done everything from travelling, tai chi in his spare time and even learning a foreign language. Ben’s still got a lot of juice in him and suddenly, he finds himself in a mid-retirement crises, wanting to work again and feels like he has a purpose and a connection with something. So, he applies for a position as part of a senior citizen outreach program (yes, it’s a thing) at a successful e-commerce company owned by Anne Hathaway’s character, Jules Ostin. Ben is hired to become Jules’ personal intern among other interns in a fast paced, studio office in Brooklyn, NY. At first, Jules pays […]

Model of the day – Gigi Hadid
09/03/15 Just this past Sunday, I tuned in to watch the VMA’s just because I was curious to see what Miley Cyrus was wearing, or not wearing. From a fashion point of view, everything was an eyesoar, but I have to hand it to her…she’s pretty confident and she owns it. People will say that it’s for attention, which is probably true but that’s the name of the Hollywood game. It’s a doggy dog world and you have to fight your colleagues for attention and fame. That’s Hollywood reality. I was, of course, tuned in it to see what people were wearing and I came up with 3 outfits. 1) Vanessa Hudgens – Her gown was a dusty rose and she looked like a fairy princess with her hair braided like a crown on top with the added petals. I thought she looked perfectly styled because it matched her aura.   2) Emily Ratajkowski – What I liked about this look was that it was more original than the dresses that we are used to nowadays, the ones that show alot of side boob, deep cleavages and just doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Although this dress had a deep […]

Maximizing your Closet…In with the New
05/24/15 Now that you’ve thrown out unwanted or outdated pieces, it’s time to see how we can work with what you already have in your closet. It could be that perfect fitting blazer you have or that favorite cashhmere sweater that you just can’t let go of. We can work around these pieces and create multiple outfits based around these favorite items. I call them “versatile” pieces or “investment” pieces, depending on how much you’ve spent on the items, quality and timelessness. It’s all about maximizing these items, and making them go a long way. With my help, I can help you channel your inner stylist and figure out how to create your own sense of style with pieces that you already know flatter your figure and expanding on that. For example, remember that perfect fitting blazer you have? These days, you can dress blazers up or down or from day to night. A tailored blazer can be worn casually with a pair of skinny jeans during the day or over a some basic trousers for the office. The below illustration, is a perfect example of how to wear a blazer 3 ways:   There really are no rules, as […]

Let It Go…(Closet Purging)
04/25/15 It’s about that time for Spring cleaning. For alot of us, this includes the annual closet purge. And when you have a closet packed with clothes, cleaning out a closet can be a a daunting task. Most of us hold on to things that can be difficult to let go of, maybe because of its sentimental value or maybe it’s simply too comfortable. It could be that scarf that your aunt gave you and expects you to wear it whenever she visits or that t-shirt you wear for lounging hanging by its last threads.  Or maybe it’s that brand new skirt that you bought 2 years ago and were meaning to wear because you promised yourself you’d lose weight. No matter what it is, you’ve gotta figure out what to let go of and what to keep, if it serves you. When I work with clients, I like to give practical tips on what to keep, what to give away and how to wear and maximize already existing items. Here are a few of my do’s and don’ts of a closet purge: Do’s: Do keep items that are classic, timeless pieces that will last you for many seasons (ex. […]
Rockin’ Rockports!
4/3/15 As I approach my 40’s, (yes I said it), I find myself less concerned about my image and more on how I truly feel. All I want is to be comfortable in my own skin. After all, true beauty starts on the inside right? Of course, being involved in the fashion industry requires me to work on a person’s surface look, but these days, you no longer have to sacrifice comfort for style. Right now, I see fashion trends where wearing Adidas sweats are in, for example. Or leggings as pants, among the teens. Something that I don’t agree with, but that’s another story. But my point is, being comfortable is finally fashionable! Not that I’d wear Adidas pants in my 40’s, but I wouldn’t wear yoga pants in public either. I still have to maintain a level of style, as a wardrobe consultant. For someone who’s on their feet lots, comfort and style go hand in hand. If I can’t walk in the shoes for more than an hour AND look good, then forget about it. As I approach my 40’s, I can honestly say, I’ve become wiser…well, when it comes to developing my own style and owning […]
My Top 5 Summer Trends for 2014
You don’t have to be a part of New York Fashion Week to experience this season’s hottest styles. Check out what my hottest Summer must haves are, besides sunscreen and water, ladies: 1) Maxi Dresses – they’re come in different shapes, with the same length but all together cute. Throw on a denim jacket on any of these gorgeous dresses and you’re good to go, whether it’s a stroll down the beach or outdoor shopping at a night market in Italy.       2) Dramatic Prints – This season, it seems like there’s an overload of prints in every form. There’s not the usual floral prints, but there’s geometric patterns, color blocking and sometimes all of these all on one garment. It’s pretty wild! But hey, I say the more the merrier…if done right. The best thing to do with these prints is not to over do it, unless you can pull it off.       3) Tea length/ High waisted long skirts – These skirts are a must because you can dress them up or down and I’m all about versatility. Both these styles can also add a touch of style to your summer wardrobe.   4) […]
Someone to be jazzed about
Ever since I was a little girl, the jazz era of the 1920’s and 30’s has always intrigued me. For me, it was the fashion that enamoured me about the Jazz era. The luxuriousness and the glamour  that represented the period was also reflected in the styles as in the flapper dress or the cloche hats. But it wasn’t until recently, specifically in the last year that I’ve become more appreciative in a central character of the 20’s: the music. To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of jazz. I grew up listening to hip hop and R&B. So, when I was asked to interview and write an article about Juno award winner and jazz vocalist, Brandi Disterheft, I was a little hesitant because of my lack of knowledge for contemporary jazz music. But, I decided to take on the challenge and explore further. From what I knew of the Jazz age, it was a time of liberation of expression through fashion, art as well as music. The spirit and energy of jazz music itself, was a force embodying the era. It was a significant character that defined the 20’s. Like the fashion, jazz was elaborate. It was […]

Morgan Gray is a writer at heart from New York City. Check out her blog at www.graygabbana.com. Spring Cleaning: Time to Party I love when spring is in the air. Sure, it still feels like winter, but as soon as March hits, I’m immediately transported into spring mode and I can’t wait for my favorite season to get here. One of the most important parts of the start of spring is spring-cleaning. Now, I know what you’re thinking: cleaning isn’t fun, it’s a drag. But let me tell you, fashionistas, spring-cleaning is actually the perfect time for a party. If you’re anything like me, your closet is overflowing with clothes, shoes, and accessories. When I stumbled upon this fun closet organizing infographic, I knew it was time for a clean-out. I love my clothes, and have […]
UGGly Winter Boots? Pt. 2 – How to wear them…
Hello and welcome to Part 2 of my homage to Ugg boots. Like I said before in my previous post, I have never been a fan of Uggs, until a short while ago. One of the main reasons why is that, these boots that weren’t very pretty, lasted for so long.  I couldn’t understand it. Maybe I should own a pair myself to realize the true Ugg experience. I get it now. The sheepskin in them are extremely comfy, no matter how Uggly I think they are. People eat them up because they’re easy to throw on. The history of Ugg boots actually dates back to 1978. A fellow named Brian Smith believed that these boots which originated in Australia would be a git in Southern California. He started selling them on the beach and he was right, surfers wore them, surfers’ girlfriends wore them and basically beach bums. They soon became a symbol of the casual Southern Californian lifestyle. A few years later, thanks to Britney Spears and other celebrities, mainstream followed suit and next thing you know, everyone and their little doggies were wearing them. It became a trend that lasted a little too long for my liking. […]
UGGly Winter Boots? Part 1
I don’t know about you, but I’ve just about had it with the cold weather. By this time, most Winnipeggers are pretty sick and tired of the snow and cold. For some, January/February is the time to head out to much warmer places like Mexico or Cuba, rather than stick around for the cold. But for those of us who are stuck here, temperature in the -10 would be like being on a beach. Unfortunately, along with the cold, we are still stuck with wearing layers, snow zone signs, warming up the car for 10 minutes beforehand and tons of snowbanks. For this season, I relish in getting prepared and facing whatever Winnipeg temperatures throw at me. I have to feel warm and wear good footwear in order to brave our temperatures. As a busy mom, I am forever running around and driving, so it’s important for me to be able to wear a sensible pair of boots like Sorels. I’m not talking about Doc Martens either. They are more of a fashion boot than anything and not at all practical for  Winnipeg Winters. And although, not too long ago I wasn’t a fan of Ugg boots. In fact, I was […]
Winter Highs…
Happy Sunday everyone! I hope everyone in Winnipeg is enjoying the mild weather we’re having lately. It’s not -50! I’m not sure if we’re getting -50 back any time soon but I am definitely taking advantage right now. Yes, I’m talking about wearing lighter, less bulker Winter gear. For Christmas, I got a new coat by Minimum(shown here) which is more suitable for Fall/Spring,  but I had to rock it. I think it’s pretty wonderful and perfect for me. In the Winter, I usually choose comfort and practicality over being fashionable. Gone are the days of wearing hot leather booties in the snow with a cute peacoat. Not only is it not practical, it’s also uncomfortable. In -50 cold, I’ll be give me my parka and Sorels any day. What can I say, I’m older and kind of wiser now. Thankfully, these days, it’s only in the late teens and not a ridiculous high windchill. So, out comes the lighter, less bulkier, more fashionable gear. I’m wearing my Minimum coat, which has a fabulous cowl neck, biker zipper and length up to my knees. Again, not too tight, loose enough but stylish. I got this stylish mom thing down. I […]
Holiday Hangovers
So, the holidays are over and thank god! No more rushing to the mall or the grocery store for last minute tasks and no more Christmas spirit of thinking of others. Most importantly, no more endless holiday food of turkey, pastries, chocolates…and carbs!  I love my family and friends but Christmas giving time is over! It’s time to think about you.  Tis’ the season when we’re all inclined to think that it’s time to make changes in our lives, for the new year. We’re all wanting to eat better, exercise, quit smoking, etc… Around this time, we’re all inclined to feel like we need to make some changes in our lives, starting with a better diet and exercising more. But no matter how quickly you hit that treadmill, that feeling of bloatedness may still not go away. So, I’m here to help. There are 2 types of resolution makers: those who are doers and those who are talkers…and I am both. I’ll eventually do, but since I am a procrastinator and shamefully poor at time management, I sometimes am a talker. For the latter, a talker, I have a solution. You can use fashion to cover the lil pooch and […]
Hunter wellies? Don’t mind if I do…
As a mom, trying to be stylish and practical can be a fine line to draw. I am always one for style, but ever since I became a mom, I’ve always tried to merge style and practicality in one harmonious outfit. You just have to. It’s just a matter of finding the right balance of style and function. If you’re a mom and you can rock heels while pushing a stroller, then kudos to you. I, for one (although I’ve been known to run in my heels many moons ago),  cannot see the practicality of wearing heels while, pushing a stroller, especially for a long period of time It was only a few years ago that there was a market for stylish moms. Usually, being a “stylish” mom was only afforded to the rich…until now. Thanks to celebrity moms, it’s now more common to see moms in Uggs, Sorels or Hunter rain boots. The latter 2 more practical than the first against weather conditions but still, Uggs provide warmth and comfort. Nevertheless, celebrity moms rockin’ some of these items has made theme popular and fashionable because of their practicality. It wasn’t in the last 5 years that they’ve become more […]

Scarf, Shmarf!
In Winnipeg, it can be a daunting task to keep warm during the Winter season. We are all too familiar with getting up earlier than usual in the morning so that we can layer on our winter gear. And with school kids, add another 15 mins per child. Fortunately, we’ve been lucky that the weather is has been milder than what we anticipate. These days, it’s almost pointless to wear the Canada Goose or even the Sorel’s on some days. Gone are the days where we have to wrap our scarf 4 times around ourselves and the kids. At the mall, the winter accessories are on sale by the bins. Lots and lots of “infinity scarfs” that were hot last winter and now, just sitting in a store collecting dust, priced at $5. It’s because they are too much fabric for our neck and our current climate. Definitely, there’s no need for ear muffs either. But as your trusty stylist, I have found the perfect “neck warmer”. Introducing…the Muffler! It’s handmade by a girlfriend of mine and comes in many colours. She charges $10 and there is no need for all the fabric that a regular scarf gives. With the Muffler, […]
Shoes cure the Blues
11/29/11 I don’t know about you but around this time of the year, I feel the blues. I know. I know. I should be in the Christmas spirit, it’s the all about the giving, blah blah blah but I can’t. I can’t stand being surrounded by the capitalism of it all. Call me a scrooge, then. Bah humbug. Let’s just get this show over with. However, the only thing that gets me through the season, besides spiked eggnog is looking at all the pretty, festive footwear. I’m talkin about the party pumps, the booties all a little more embellished for those Christmas parties! Let me show you some of my faves and top styles this season that are sure to cure any blues and liven up the party!

A Sunday afternoon in Paris…
So, here's an outfit I would love to stroll around in on the streets of Paris
Cha Cha Party
11/30/08 Last Thursday, I attended one of my favorite boutiques in the city’s customer appreciation party and even though I didn’t stay as long as I wanted, I still experienced the warm energy that I associate with Cha Cha palace. Every time I enter the 3 storey house, I can’t help but feel like I’m almost walking into my best friend’s house and then her, letting me raid her closet and Thursday was no exception. The staff, headed by the lovely Sandi Johnson were there to make us feel welcome and to show us the latest styles that they had to offer. The store was definitely buzzing that night as they even gave out surprise discounts. There was plenty of wine, champagne and SUSHI! But even on a regular day, the staff at Cha Cha are  quite warm and friendly. And this energy only adds and reflects the pieces that Cha Cha carries. On the first floor are the footwear, handbags, and jewellry, where you will see lines from Fly London, Lug and  Satya. The second floor is where I spent most of my time, and carries clothing lines such as OHM, Comfy, Metallicus, Free People, Beatrice Halloway just to […]
