A Tribute to Prince and his style
04/29/16 Last Thursday on April 21, we lost one of the world’s most brilliant musical artists – Prince. His famous songs like Purple Rain, Kiss, When Doves Cry and Rasberry Beret were often played even before his death at clubs. His music will forever live on because he was real. Pure, raw talent – a true musician to the core. For those who were hardcore Prince fans, they knew that this man was bigger than life. He transcended the genre, style and most importantly, a humanitarian at heart. I wish I saw him live. A big regret. I always thought I would, eventually. What I always admired about Prince, is that despite his 5’2 frame, doe – ish eyes, there was a sexiness to him. He could wear eyeliner and a ruffly shirt and still oozed sexiness. The man wore heels and yet, men love and respect him! He definitely owned his style. Not only that, he had swagger. I remember seeing him on “The View” and surprising the ladies with such swagger and confidence in his walk, the audience when nuts! He was a walking sexual contradiction, with his big, brown eyelined eyes and then he starts talking and […]
The next chapter…I mean next scene in my life.
04/06/16 Good morning!! I feel like it’s been eons since I’ve written anything down and I apologize. Ever since I moved to Vancouver, I’ve made some career changes in my life, resulting in my moods going wonky and feeling unmotivated to write. But, I’m back. I’ve had to stray away (temporarily) from fashion styling and wardrobe makeovers for awhile until I can get my feet on the ground in a new city, so I turned to my next passion – working in film. Thankfully, this time around, there is plenty of work in the city, which is pretty much why it’s deemed “the Hollywood of the North”. So, I found myself diving in the “not so glamorous” film industry in B.C, as a costumer. And I stress”not so glamorous” because everyone, including me always thought it was. If you think 16 hr days in upredictable weather and lugging racks upon racks of clothing is glamorous, then kudos to you. It may actually sound dreadful but I actually love it. The upside to this is the great pay, meeting all sorts of interesting characters from cast and crew; and I get fed well – all day long. With the unpredictable weather, […]
Rockin’ Rockports!
4/3/15 As I approach my 40’s, (yes I said it), I find myself less concerned about my image and more on how I truly feel. All I want is to be comfortable in my own skin. After all, true beauty starts on the inside right? Of course, being involved in the fashion industry requires me to work on a person’s surface look, but these days, you no longer have to sacrifice comfort for style. Right now, I see fashion trends where wearing Adidas sweats are in, for example. Or leggings as pants, among the teens. Something that I don’t agree with, but that’s another story. But my point is, being comfortable is finally fashionable! Not that I’d wear Adidas pants in my 40’s, but I wouldn’t wear yoga pants in public either. I still have to maintain a level of style, as a wardrobe consultant. For someone who’s on their feet lots, comfort and style go hand in hand. If I can’t walk in the shoes for more than an hour AND look good, then forget about it. As I approach my 40’s, I can honestly say, I’ve become wiser…well, when it comes to developing my own style and owning […]
UGGly Winter Boots? Pt. 2 – How to wear them…
Hello and welcome to Part 2 of my homage to Ugg boots. Like I said before in my previous post, I have never been a fan of Uggs, until a short while ago. One of the main reasons why is that, these boots that weren’t very pretty, lasted for so long.  I couldn’t understand it. Maybe I should own a pair myself to realize the true Ugg experience. I get it now. The sheepskin in them are extremely comfy, no matter how Uggly I think they are. People eat them up because they’re easy to throw on. The history of Ugg boots actually dates back to 1978. A fellow named Brian Smith believed that these boots which originated in Australia would be a git in Southern California. He started selling them on the beach and he was right, surfers wore them, surfers’ girlfriends wore them and basically beach bums. They soon became a symbol of the casual Southern Californian lifestyle. A few years later, thanks to Britney Spears and other celebrities, mainstream followed suit and next thing you know, everyone and their little doggies were wearing them. It became a trend that lasted a little too long for my liking. […]
UGGly Winter Boots? Part 1
I don’t know about you, but I’ve just about had it with the cold weather. By this time, most Winnipeggers are pretty sick and tired of the snow and cold. For some, January/February is the time to head out to much warmer places like Mexico or Cuba, rather than stick around for the cold. But for those of us who are stuck here, temperature in the -10 would be like being on a beach. Unfortunately, along with the cold, we are still stuck with wearing layers, snow zone signs, warming up the car for 10 minutes beforehand and tons of snowbanks. For this season, I relish in getting prepared and facing whatever Winnipeg temperatures throw at me. I have to feel warm and wear good footwear in order to brave our temperatures. As a busy mom, I am forever running around and driving, so it’s important for me to be able to wear a sensible pair of boots like Sorels. I’m not talking about Doc Martens either. They are more of a fashion boot than anything and not at all practical for  Winnipeg Winters. And although, not too long ago I wasn’t a fan of Ugg boots. In fact, I was […]
Winter Highs…
Happy Sunday everyone! I hope everyone in Winnipeg is enjoying the mild weather we’re having lately. It’s not -50! I’m not sure if we’re getting -50 back any time soon but I am definitely taking advantage right now. Yes, I’m talking about wearing lighter, less bulker Winter gear. For Christmas, I got a new coat by Minimum(shown here) which is more suitable for Fall/Spring,  but I had to rock it. I think it’s pretty wonderful and perfect for me. In the Winter, I usually choose comfort and practicality over being fashionable. Gone are the days of wearing hot leather booties in the snow with a cute peacoat. Not only is it not practical, it’s also uncomfortable. In -50 cold, I’ll be give me my parka and Sorels any day. What can I say, I’m older and kind of wiser now. Thankfully, these days, it’s only in the late teens and not a ridiculous high windchill. So, out comes the lighter, less bulkier, more fashionable gear. I’m wearing my Minimum coat, which has a fabulous cowl neck, biker zipper and length up to my knees. Again, not too tight, loose enough but stylish. I got this stylish mom thing down. I […]
Hunter wellies? Don’t mind if I do…
As a mom, trying to be stylish and practical can be a fine line to draw. I am always one for style, but ever since I became a mom, I’ve always tried to merge style and practicality in one harmonious outfit. You just have to. It’s just a matter of finding the right balance of style and function. If you’re a mom and you can rock heels while pushing a stroller, then kudos to you. I, for one (although I’ve been known to run in my heels many moons ago),  cannot see the practicality of wearing heels while, pushing a stroller, especially for a long period of time It was only a few years ago that there was a market for stylish moms. Usually, being a “stylish” mom was only afforded to the rich…until now. Thanks to celebrity moms, it’s now more common to see moms in Uggs, Sorels or Hunter rain boots. The latter 2 more practical than the first against weather conditions but still, Uggs provide warmth and comfort. Nevertheless, celebrity moms rockin’ some of these items has made theme popular and fashionable because of their practicality. It wasn’t in the last 5 years that they’ve become more […]
